Jon Stewart ‘Baffled’ By MAGA ‘Patriotism,’ Says Trumpers Would ‘Be Tories’ in the Revolutionary War
Jon Stewart accused the MAGA movement of having the “illusion of patriotism” and said loyal supporters of former President Donald Trump would be “Tories” in the Revolutionary War on Friday.
In the latest episode of his podcast The Weekly Show, Stewart brought on Mona Charen, policy editor at The Bulwark, and Harvard Professor Emeritus Laurence H. Tribe to discuss what he described as conflicting messages out of MAGA.
“There’s something that has somewhat baffled me about — well, a few things have baffled me about this MAGA movement. But the main thing is, it is steeped in the iconography of patriotism, of the revolution, it’s ‘we the people,’ it’s on the buses, it’s all about fealty to the Constitution and reverence for the Founding Fathers, and yet they are supporting an individual who seems to, if this were the Revolution, I mean, they’d be Tories,” Stewart said.
During the Revolutionary War, Tories were colonists who remained loyal to the British crown.
Stewart argued Trump’s desire for absolute immunity for presidents flies “in the face” of the patriotic imagery and messaging among his supporters. The Daily Show host called for MAGA to not “couch” their movement in “admiration for the Constitution” if they are following Trump.
“He wants absolute immunity for the president. It seems to fly in the face of everything they feel is the foundation of their movement. And I’m not saying, ‘Oh, don’t support Donald Trump or don’t support MAGA,'” he said. “Do whatever you want. That’s America. You vote for who you’re going to vote for, but don’t couch it in Constitutional admiration.”
