‘I Just Don’t Get It!’ Acosta Goes Off On Republicans Who Refuse to Call Out Trump Over Liz Cheney Comments
A clearly frustrated Jim Acosta repeatedly claimed “I just don’t get it!” while interviewing Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) on Friday about Donald Trump’s controversial comments about Liz Cheney the night before.
Burchett appeared on CNN Friday to discuss Trump’s suggestion that “radical war hawk” Liz Cheney should experience the horrors of combat for herself.
Trump told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson Thursday night, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrel shooting at her. Okay. Let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face.”
Acosta repeatedly tried to get Burchett to denounce Trump’s comments.
“Yeah, but you don’t want Liz Cheney to be shot,” Acosta began. “He should not be saying that Liz Cheney should be sent off in a situation where she should be shot. I mean that — can’t we just all agree that that’s out of bounds?”
“I hope nobody gets shot, but under this administration, unfortunately, we’ve been in a lot of wars, and we weren’t in any under Trump,” Burchett said. “And I think it’s clearly a deflection on their part. They’re seizing on everything. This is no issue that will decide anything.”
Burchett then suggested that the controversy might now allow “Liz Cheney to get up and sell more books and be more critical of the Trump administration.”
After some back and forth, Acosta began flailing his arms.
“I mean, at what point, does a Republican member of Congress call out Trump for this kind of language? I just don’t get it! At some point, I don’t — doesn’t any of this matter? Isn’t this important that a candidate for president is saying that Liz Cheney should be shot right before an election? I just don’t — I respect you congressman, we have lots of conversations. I just don’t get it! It’s outrageous!”
Cheney took to X, formerly Twitter, to respond to Trump’s comments, writing, “This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.”
