CNN’s Erin Burnett Apologizes for Saying ‘F*cking Mexican’ On Air While Reading Alleged Trump Quote
CNN’s Erin Burnett apologized to viewers Tuesday night while reading part of a report from The Atlantic in which it was claimed former President Donald Trump complained about picking up the cost for a deceased soldier’s funeral and referred to her as “a fucking Mexican.”
On Tuesday’s edition of OutFront, Burnett discussed at length a new piece from The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg. Goldberg claimed to have spoken with sources who said Trump questioned why his generals could not be loyal to him in the way Hitler’s were.
Goldberg also claimed in his report that Trump complained about picking up the tab for Vanessa Guillén, a U.S. Army private who was murdered at Fort Hood in 2020. Burnett read from the report and quoted an alleged Trump statement:
Trump had told the family that he would be paying for the funeral and then he said if you need help, I’ll help you out. So, a few months later when he’s in this meeting with staff, this is where the reporting comes in, according to Goldberg, Trump asked, “Did they bill us for the funeral? What did it cost?”
According to attendees, and to contemporaneous notes of the meeting taken by a participant, an aide answered: Yes, we received a bill; the funeral cost $60,000. Trump became angry. “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a fucking Mexican!”
After reading the excerpt, Burnett said, “Excuse my language there, I just read it. But that’s what he said, so.”
The CNN host noted Goldberg’s reporting had been denied by a Trump spokesperson.
Goldberg reported that his sources said Trump uttered the quote weeks after the 2020 election during a meeting in the Oval Office.
After at first allegedly expressing anger at the cost of the funeral Trump reportedly said, “Don’t pay it! …Can you believe it? …Fucking people, trying to rip me off.”
Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff, said he was in the room and that the former president did not make the comments.
“Any suggestion that President Trump disparaged Ms. Guillen or refused to pay for her funeral expenses is absolutely false,” he said.
