Jordan Klepper Roasts Katie Britt’s ‘First Swing’ SOTU Response with Jen Psaki: ‘Performative Outrage Is a Skill’
Daily Show contributor Jordan Klepper offered a review of Sen. Katie Britt’s (R-AL) GOP response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, and the comedian was a little unimpressed.
“Well, it was definitely my least favorite Tennessee Williams play, but I was glad to see it resurfacing again,” Klepper said on Sunday in an interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki.
Britt’s kitchen-set response quickly earned mockery, and Scarlett Johansson was brought in on Saturday Night Live to offer her own satirical version.
“Frankly, performative outrage is a skill and it’s something you saw her take her first swing at which is always an exciting time for a performer,” Klepper said on Sunday. “As a failed actor myself, I know what it’s like to be handed a shaky script and not have the skills to really communicate with my audience and I felt a certain kinship with the senator there. But she gave it her best. She knew who she was playing to in an oddly more sexual way more often than not. It felt like she was coming on to the moderate GOP moms of America with stories of human trafficking, but hey, if that’s the game plan then good luck.”
Psaki noted that Britt has faced criticism for telling a sex trafficking story during her response to Biden and not being clear that the events happened before Biden was president. Britt had to clear that up on Fox News, and the woman at the center of the story Britt told has also criticized the senator.
“I don’t think a lot of people pay attention to the cleanup,” Klepper said.
The Daily Show comedian argued Britt is likely thinking “mission accomplished” after her talk despite the backlash.
“She got the headline she needs. She spoke with fear. She spoke with outrage. She had the headlines,” he said. “I think those got digested into the MAGA sphere.”
