‘Give Matt a Chance’: Lindsey Graham Warms to Gaetz Mere Hours After Expressing Skepticism Over Trump Nominee
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) urged his fellow Republicans in the Senate to “give Matt a Chance” on Wednesday, mere hours after he expressed skepticism over President-elect Donald Trump’s decision to nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) for attorney general.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, alongside Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, Graham remarked, “I will just say, number one, I hope that Governor DeSantis – it’s his job to pick – but you really couldn’t do better than Lara Trump [to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate]. She’s proven herself in the trenches, she’s ready to go on day one.”
He then added, “I’m telling my Democratic friends, elections have consequences whether you like it or not. You are accusing Matt of doing the very thing that you did. Matt Gaetz didn’t lie under oath, Matt Gaetz did not sign FISA warrants that were based on Russian disinformation, so we’re going to give the president a chance to put his people forward.”
Graham concluded, “To every Republican, give Matt a chance.”
Just hours before his Fox News appearance, Graham – like many other Republicans in the Senate – expressed skepticism over Gaetz’s nomination.
Asked by CNN’s Manu Raju for his thoughts on Gaetz as attorney general, Graham said, “I don’t know yet, I’ll have to think about that one.”
After Raju pressed, “Do you have any concerns about him?” Graham replied, “We’ll see.”
Several Republican senators have already openly opposed Gaetz’s nomination, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who said, “I don’t think it’s a serious nomination for the attorney general.”
