‘You Were My Ride or Die!’ 5 Most Fawning Moments from The View’s Sitdown With Joe Biden
President Joe Biden became the first sitting president to appear on The View on Wednesday, and the hosts let the praise flow for the better part of an hour.
The hosts — Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin — have never made any secret of their opposition to former President Donald Trump. During Wednesday’s interview, however, they gave Biden an overwhelmingly warm welcome and for the most part fawned over the sitting president and praised him for stepping aside.
Check out the five most-fawning moments from Biden’s interview on The View:
Sara Haines kicks things off by praising Biden and comparing him to “one of The Beatles”: Haines opened the interview with Biden by asking if he is “at peace” with his decision to drop his reelection campaign, but she first praised him for “putting your country first above any personal ambition,” earning applause from the audience.
“We love you, Joe Biden!” one person from the crowd yelled.
“It’s like having one of The Beatles at the table!” Haines said in response to the hoopla.
Whoopi Goldberg tells Joe Biden he was her “ride or die”: Griffin, who was early in calling for Biden to step aside, asked one of the tougher questions on Wednesday by bringing up Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and reports that she was one of the key players in pushing Biden to drop his reelection campaign. After Biden side-stepped addressing the Pelosi bit directly, Goldberg took to dissing Democrats who pushed Biden to drop his reelection campaign.
Goldberg said:
I didn’t like the way they did it. I’m going to just say it out loud because nobody says it out loud. I didn’t like the way it was done publicly. I thought they could have done this in a different way because we didn’t need to hear all the inner-fighting. I didn’t like it. I’m saying it to you. You were my ride or die. I was going — wherever you were going, that’s where I was going.
She then referred to Trump’s behavior as being like a “bug” and Biden pretended to squash a bug on the table, eliciting applause from the audience.
Joy Behar asks Joe Biden about Trump assassination attempts — by running down Trump’s rhetoric: Behar asked Biden about Trump blaming him and Harris and their rhetoric for two attempted assassination attempts against him. Conservatives were pointing to Biden pretending the literally squash Trump like a bug on The View as the latest example of troubling rhetoric in the wake of the two assassination attempts.
Behar took Biden down “memory lane” by bringing up a number of troubling comments from Trump, including calling for a military tribunal for Liz Cheney, saying the “Second Amendment people” should do something about Hillary Clinton, and more. Behar then brought up Trump blaming the assassination attempts on Biden and asked the president, “Don’t you think that is unbelievable?”
Biden said Trump has “not a lot of social redeeming value” and claimed Trump “really does not believe in democracy and the guardrails that our system has set up.”
Ana Navarro thanks Biden for picking a diverse cabinet despite being a “straight white guy”: “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Navarro told Biden while praising him for picking a “diverse” administration.
Navarro said:
I want to say thank you to you as well because one of the things you promised when you came in, you said you were going to have an administration that looked like America and with so many other things, you delivered. You gave us a very diverse cabinet. You gave us the first Black woman in the Supreme Court, you gave us Kamala Harris, the first woman vice president.
Navarro then repeatedly thanked Biden for picking Vice President Kamala Harris and making other trailblazing appointments and nominations.
“In case people don’t know, you’re like a straight white guy so why was representation important to you?” she asked, leading to Biden explaining that “representation” in the White House inspires younger generations.
Joy Behar and Biden hold hands and bond over being 80 years old: Biden told the hosts of The View concerns about his age and stamina were not the main reason he dropped his reelection campaign and while discussing his age — 81 — Behar reminded him they are the same age.
“It’s hard for me to even say how old I am. No, I’m serious. I give my word. It’s like, holy God, that can’t be right. That just can’t be right,” Biden said.
“I’m your age, by the way. The number gives me vertigo,” Behar, 81, said, Biden taking her hand in his.
“No woman close to me is as old as I am,” he said.
“Right now they are,” Goldberg joked as Behar rested her head on Biden’s shoulder.
