Gov. Doug Burgum Torches Biden for ‘Garbage’ Comment — Right Before NBC’s Welker Plays Clip of Trump Calling Harris Allies ‘Scum’

Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND) slammed President Joe Biden for calling supporters of former President Donald Trump “garbage” — but then sang a different tune after being confronted with a clip of Trump calling allies of Vice President Kamala Harris “scum” and “absolute garbage.”

In a Sunday morning interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, moderator Kristen Welker confronted Burgum about the comments of comic Tony Hinchcliffe at last week’s Trump rally in New York. (Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”)

Burgum replied by invoking Biden’s remarks on Tuesday — in which he said, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” (The White House put out a transcript claiming Biden said “supporter’s” — referring to the rally speakers only and not all Trump supporters. But the White House stenographer’s office reportedly protested the change to the transcript.

“A comic that no one’s ever heard of says something versus the President of the United States calling half the voters in the country garbage — President Biden,” Burgum said. “I think this shows two things. One, it’s the disrespect of this administration for Americans and their concerns, whether it’s the border, whether it’s inflation. But it also reflects what we’ve seen is that the vice president, Harris, was part of this cover up of Joe Biden’s capacity.”

But Welker then confronted Burgum with a clip of Trump, at a rally on Saturday, attacking Harris allies.

“It’s not her, it’s the people that surround her,” Trump said. “They’re scum. Absolute garbage.”

Welker followed up by asking, “is it hypocritical to fixate on President Biden’s comments considering Donald Trump used the word garbage to describe Kamala Harris’s supporters?”

Burgum, in response, sounded a different note.

“The parsing of comments from the last seven days is not what’s going to determine the election,” he said. “I would be thrilled to be on this show talking about the fact that North Korea’s sending troops to Ukraine, that Israel is getting ready to confront Iran over their nuclear weapons. But this is American politics and this is the season of the last week before election. There’s always been there’s always a lot of name calling in the last week. This has all happened before.
