Fox Analyst Argues Major National Security Threat Relating to ‘Russia and Space’ Bolsters Argument for Ukraine Funding
Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) released a statement on Wednesday asking President Joe Biden to declassify information related to “a serious national security threat,” but didn’t provide specific information to the public.
NBC News confirmed with four sources who had knowledge of the issue that the statement was in regard to Russia’s military capabilities.
But the lack of additional information has left people speculating, and Fox News welcomed former CIA Station Chief Dan Hoffman on to offer some perspective on what the threat could entail. The segment began with Fox anchor John Roberts noting that Jacqui Heinrich has reported this has “something to do with Russia and space.” Hoffman told Fox:
[T]he larger picture is that we’ve got billions of dollars waiting to be approved by the House of Representatives to help Ukraine in their time of need so that they can carry on this existential fight for their survival. And if this intelligence shows that Russia is the enemy, that we know Russia is led by the KGB operative in the Kremlin, [Russian President] Vladimir Putin, then that would only add to the argument for why it’s important now, with the greatest alacrity to proceed with giving Ukraine the money that they need. Now, remember, most of that money is to replenish U.S. stocks, so that our coffers are full of the weapons that we need.
Given that context, Hoffman said House Intelligence Committee Chair Turner may have done the White House a big favor by jumping the gun ahead of his Gang of Eight meeting with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Thursday:
Hasnie: Do you think at this point, the White House, or even members of Congress should share some information tomorrow after this briefing with the American people just to sort of calm fears?
Hoffman: Yeah, I think Representative Turner is doing the administration a big favor here by pressing for just that. This is a bad time to be appeasing Vladimir Putin. I think, again, that’s the larger point that he wants to make.
Now, Jake Sullivan was probably being super extra cautious here because this is intelligence that he may not have approval to declassify at this point. But Representative Turner, who feels the pulse of our nation on Capitol Hill, is pushing ahead, and in my view, at least, rightly so. You can declassify enough of this without sources and methods, in all likelihood, where we don’t jeopardize our own national security. But we frame the dialog and the debate over how we relate to Russia as an adversary.
