‘Have You Apologized to Him?’ Chip Roy Grills Biden Official About Raid on Home of Pro-Life Activist

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) grilled United States Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, asking if she had apologized to pro-life activist Mark Houck for a raid on his home.

Houck was arrested last year for alleged violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. His case became well known after his arrest when his wife, Ryan-Marie Houck, alleged that that the scene at their family home that preceded his arrest was unnecessarily threatening.

According to Houck, somewhere between 20-30 armed FBI agents showed up at the house where their seven children were last September, pounding on the door and screaming at the Houcks to open it. Mrs. Houck also claimed that the agents pointed their weapons at both her and her husband in front of their children.

“It was all just very scary and traumatic,” she said. “I don’t really know what’s going to come of it when you see guns pointed at your dad and your mom in your house when you first wake up in the morning.”

The FBI has disputed the Houcks’ version of events, calling them “inaccurate.”

The charges against Houck stemmed from an incident outside of an abortion clinic during which Houck shoved a man who he said had entered his personal space and was directing “inappropriate and disgusting” comments at his 12-year-old son.

Houck was acquitted of the charges against him in January, causing Roy to ask Clarke if she would apologize to him in light of his acquittal.

“Mark Houck, who was targeted, had a raid of his home, prosecuted under this, was acquitted by a jury. Have you apologized to him on behalf of the Department of Justice for that grave violation of his civil rights, having his family have to watch him being raided at his home? And then he’s acquitted by a federal jury. Have you apologized to him?” asked Roy.

“Well, we we follow the facts and apply the law, that is our our job. And we welcome opportunities to engage with other pro-life groups that may be experiencing threats or acts of violence,” replied Clarke.

“The answer to that is no,” shot back Roy.
