Rand Paul Swiftly Employs Heimlich Maneuver To Aid Choking Colleague at Senate Lunch
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) used the Heimlich maneuver on fellow Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) while she was choking on food at a lunch on Thursday.
Paul, a medical doctor, did the procedure at a lunch with other senators on Capitol Hill. A Heimlich maneuver is typically performed when an individual wraps their arms between a person’s ribcage and belly button, thrusting their hands into into their abdomen until the food stuck in the individual’s throat is coughed out.
Ernst took to social media to thank Paul for his assistance, while also using the occasion for some lighthearted humor.
“Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing dour our throats. Thanks, Dr. Rand Paul!” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, while responding to a post reporting on Paul’s actions.

Earlier Thursday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) shared on social media a picture with him and Ernst standing together holding an “Iowa chop” ribeye steak for lunch. Ernest was the host of the lunch which was designed to showoff her state’s culinary skills.

“It’s a good thing he did,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said when asked about the incident. “God bless Rand Paul. I never thought I’d say that.”
Paul has not responded publicly to the praise for his heroism.
