Bret Baier Calls Trump ‘Holdup’ on Fox News Debate, Thinks Harris Is Game for Showdown
Fox News host Bret Baier called former President Donald Trump the “holdup” regarding a possible Fox News debate between him and Vice President Kamala Harris.
On Tuesday, Baier told radio host Hugh Hewitt that he believes the Harris campaign “would do” a Fox News debate. Following a Sept. 10 debate on ABC News, Trump declared there would be no further debates despite saying it was his “strongest” debate performance. Harris, meanwhile, agreed to an Oct. 23 invitation for a CNN debate. That agreement was made after Trump announced there would be no new debates.
“The latest is, I actually believe — this is me talking — that the Harris campaign would do a Fox debate,” Baier told Hewitt.
The “holdup,” Baier continued, is the former president.
“Now, his reasoning, don’t know. I always thought that it would be like a bug zapper in the backyard for the former president in that he couldn’t get away from the light of 70 million viewers and that he would have to eventually, just knowing him, you know, do it if it was on Fox and something he could agree to. I’m getting the sense from him and the campaign that they aren’t moving past it, and really, the holdup is not the Harris campaign and Fox; it is the former president,” he said.
Before the ABC News debate, Trump agreed to a Fox News proposal for a debate, but that never materialized.
In his Truth Social message declaring there will be no new debates, Trump accused Harris of being a “no show” at the Fox debate.
“She was a no-show at the Fox Debate and refused to do NBC & CBS. KAMALA SHOULD FOCUS ON WHAT SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE DURING THE LAST ALMOST FOUR YEAR PERIOD. THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” he wrote.
Baier called it a “missed opportunity” for Trump to skip a Fox debate and he said the network has also been offering town hall events that would be moderated by him and fellow Fox host Martha MacCallum.
