‘Opportunity to Make Amends’: Hunter Biden Says He’ll ‘Never Take The Clemency’ He’s Been Given ‘For Granted’ After Dad Issues Full Pardon
President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden in a surprise move on Sunday night, and shortly afterward, Hunter released a statement on the “mercy” he’s been afforded by the move.
The president’s son was facing two sentencing hearings in December, one on gun charges and the other on tax evasion. But in the surprise move, a reversal of his previous repeated statements that he would not do so, Biden issued a full and complete pardon for his son and stated that the prosecutions were unfair and politically motivated.
For his part, Hunter soon released his own statement, saying that he has “admitted and taken responsibility” for the mistakes that he’s being pardoned for, and described his legal troubles as “mistakes” that were being “exploited to publicly humiliate and shame” him and the Biden family for “political sport.”
He ended by saying that while he has previously “squandered many opportunities and advantages,” that in addiction recovery one can be “given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy that we have been afforded.”
“I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted,” Biden wrote, “and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”
STATEMENT OF ROBERT HUNTER BIDEN
December 1, 2024
“I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction — mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport. Despite all of this, I have maintained my sobriety for more than five years because of my deep faith and the unwavering love and support of my family and friends. In the throes of addiction, I squandered many opportunities and advantages. In recovery we can be given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy that we have been afforded. I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”
