Reporter Grills Bucs QB Baker Mayfield Over TD Celebration in Awkward Back-and-Forth: ‘Are You Italian, By Any Chance?’
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield on Sunday was involved in an awkward back-and-forth with a reporter over a touchdown celebration.
At the end of the second quarter of the Bucs’ game against the New York Giants, Mayfield scored a rushing touchdown to increase the Bucs’ lead to 23-0. The celebration he did was a clear reference to the celebration done by Giants QB Tommy DeVito — who was watching from the sideline.
After the game, Mayfield was asked about the celebration. Although he explained that it was simply a tribute to DeVito, one reporter continued to press him about it. Here is the transcript of their exchange:
MAYFIELD: Tribute. Tribute to Tommy, yeah. He’s a good dude. He’s got swag.
REPORTER: Who came up with that?
MAYFIELD: Oh, I have no idea. I just see him do it.
REPORTER: No, but whose idea — I’m sorry, whose idea was it for you to do that? And when did you know you were gonna do it?
MAYFIELD: You know, most of the times, I don’t know what I’m gonna do, so — spontaneous stuff.
REPORTER: That was just spontaneous? That was not planned? I mean, even your teammates got into it, too.
MAYFIELD: Yeah, you know, New York fans love Tommy here. Give them something they like.
REPORTER: Are you Italian, by any chance, or no?
MAYFIELD: I haven’t done a 23andMe, but I don’t know.
