Aubrey Plaza Reveals She Watched ‘A Lot of Fox News’ to Play a Morally Corrupt Journalist in Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’

Aubrey Plaza is currently promoting three projects — one in which she plays a witch, one in which she meets the younger version of herself, and one in which she plays a corrupt journalist. And for one of them, she watched “a lot of Fox News” for research.

That project was Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long passion project Megalopolis, and Plaza appeared on The Daily Show on Tuesday to talk about how she prepared for her role as Wow Platinum. Plaza was questioned by host Desi Lydic about working with Coppola and getting inside the head of her character and invoked two former Fox News personalities to get a hint of just how deep Plaza delved:

Lydic: In all seriousness, you play a morally corrupt journalist. How much Tucker Carlson footage did you have to watch to study for this character?

Plaza: Actually, in all seriousness, I did watch a lot of Fox News to research my role as a corrupt journalist. I did.

Lydic: How high are your therapy bills now?

Plaza: High, very high.

Lydic also asked about Coppola calling Plaza by her character’s name:

Lydic: Did he call you by your character name “Wow Platinum” the entire time?

Plaza: Yes. He still does.

Lydic: Was that confusing, like when he went, “Wow,” were you like, “Are you calling my name or did I have a good take?”

Plaza: No, I think, you know, it was helpful. We really were on the same page, him and I. … It didn’t feel weird at all, and it still doesn’t, when he calls me “Wow.” I just immediately, you know, slip back in and and do that, and then I slip back out.

Lydic: Just start spreading conspiracy theories, just like Megyn Kelly.

Tucker Carlson left Fox News roughly 18 months ago, and Kelly has ben doing her own podcast and YouTube shows for years now.
