Jamie Raskin Challenging Jerry Nadler for Top Dem Spot on House Judiciary Committee
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has announced he will challenge longtime colleague Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) to become the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.
MSNBC’s Sahil Kapur told Chris Jansing Reports that Raskin made the announcement to colleagues in a letter on Monday
“Raskin says, quote, ‘In the 119th Congress, the Judiciary Committee will be the headquarters of congressional opposition to authoritarianism and MAGA’S campaign to dismantle our constitutional system and the rule of law as we know it,’ unquote,” said Kapur.
“He goes on to make his case for this. Raskin is, of course, currently the ranking member on the Oversight Committee. He is very well-known to a lot of people as the lead impeachment manager for the second Trump impeachment, that was the January 6th impeachment after the riot on the Capitol. He was also famously a member of the Select Committee to Investigate January 6th. So, this is Raskin challenging Nadler, who has held the position of top Democrat — both ranking member and chair — of the Judiciary Committee.”
Kapur said Raskin’s challenge comes as more younger Democrats are seeking positions held by “the old-guard.”
“Democrats have the seniority system on committees where a lot of them stay for very long periods of time, and maybe, just maybe, some Democrats want to challenge that.”
