‘People Are Feeling Frightened’ Former Biden Comms Director Tells Dems To Be ‘More Aggressive’ on Border and Crime
A former communications director for President Joe Biden’s White House is recommending Democrats be “more aggressive” in their responses to the southern border and crime.
CNN commentator Kate Bedingfield appeared on CNN This Morning on Wednesday and responded to New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) discussing at a press conference that he believes repeat criminal offender migrants should not have the right to remain in the city. Adams has spoken on numerous occasions about the stretched-thin resources the city has as they house migrants bused in from Texas as the state has struggled to deal with record crossings.
Bedingfield said it’s “smart” for Democrats to address the border and crime head on, but cautioned against subscribing to the type of language Donald Trump deploys to describe the potential effects of illegal immigration.
Bedingfield said:
I think it’s smart for Democrats to be more aggressive on it because people are feeling frightened. Now I don’t subscribe, to borrow the mayor’s language, I don’t subscribe to the Trump vision of America as a decaying wasteland where packs of people are running wild committing crime, but it is true that people across the country, particularly in cities, are concerned about crime. It is smart for Democrats to be more aggressive about it, to be more responsive to what people are feeling
Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Mayor Kelly Girtz (D) saw firsthand on Wednesday just how heated the migrant topic has become. The mayor has faced harsh criticism in light of a Venezuelan migrant being arrested for the murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley. At a press conference, he was shouted down by protesters saying there’s an “invasion” and blasting him over a 2019 resolution welcoming undocumented migrants into the city.
Border legislation in Congress has also reached a standstill as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) and others insist the president already has the authority to shut down the border and put in place reforms.
