‘Didn’t Have That On My Bingo Card!’ CNN’s Chris Wallace Turns Shark Tank Host Kevin O’Leary Into Sobbing Wreck
CNN anchor Chris Wallace was stunned when hard-hearted entrepreneur and Shark Tank co-host Kevin O’Leary broke down sobbing in an interview, seconds after mocking a contestant who cried on his show.
Wallace interviewed O’Leary — nicknamed “Mr. Wonderful” on his business-oriented reality competition show — for this week’s edition of his Max series Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace on various topics, including his on-air persona, his relationships with co-hosts, his track record as an investor, and more.
O’Leary was just finished saying, of the prospects who get emotional on Shark Tank, that ” if they think they can cry their way to success in the real world, they’re going to be crying a lot” when Wallace asked O’Leary about his foray into politics.
That led to a story that resulted in tears from O’Leary:
WALLACE: I have to say, in preparing for this, there was a lot about you that I didn’t know. One is, I knew you were very active in Canadian politics. In 2017 you were running to be the head of the Conservative Party. Which had you gotten that job, you had been running for prime minister, and you dropped out at the last minute because you didn’t speak French well enough.
O’LEARY: Yeah, I needed 21 seats of the 78 in Quebec. I was leading in the polls, dramatically, until I hit Quebec. I’m dyslexic, as we previously discussed, I’ll never learn French. Today, I believe I could make it, because the French population has been diluted so much, it’s down to 18% but back then, it wasn’t possible. And it also leads to a story about Mark Cuban that is very important when people pit us against each other, a lot saying Cuban disagrees with you on this policy or that. In the Canadian system, you have to pay back your losses if, if you’re a loser in a race at $1,600 per contribution by only Canadian citizens, you can’t pay back your own debt, and if you fail to do it in 24 months, you can be put in prison, and that is extremely hard to do once you’re a loser. And I was really struggling to, I was 2 million in the hole, and I wanted to write the check and just clear the books, and the government said, No, you can’t do that. You’re going to be subject to the laws of the land. You have now, I think, 21 months left. So I called up Mark. I said, Mark, I’m in trouble here. I need to hold an event where I can sell a lot of tickets to a lot of people who are going to attend, and I need you to fly up here and be beside me on the stage. And I’m going to ask Barbara, also, to come up here. And I want to hold an event in a giant Castle called Casa Loma. He didn’t even blink. He was on the plane the next day. He never even questioned it. He said, Where do I have to be? I’ll be there. So…Give me a moment.
WALLACE: Well, I did not have that on my bingo card, Mr. Wonderful, uh, getting emotional.
O’LEARY: Anyways, I owe him a lot for that. He saved my ass.
WALLACE: I want to end on a happier note.
