‘It’s Not the Press Corps!’ Chris Wallace Panelists Lock Horns Over Harris vs. Trump Economics

Panelists on The Chris Wallace Show on Saturday locked horns over the economic policies of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump and which one will be able to make the better pitch to voters in their Tuesday debate.

Manhattan Institute president Reihan Salam pointed to Harris’s capital gains tax plan as just one problematic position and also linked her to increased tariffs after other panelists pointed to Trump’s strategy of increasing tariffs as his biggest weakness on the economy.

“It’s true that Trump has gone pretty far on that front, but the Biden-Harris administration did as well,” Salam argued, noting that President Joe Biden has increased tariffs during his administration.

“Come on, [Trump’s] gone so far on tariffs, he should stamp it on the top of head with a t,” podcaster Kara Swisher argued back.

“Absolutely,” Salam agreed.

“He is going far too far and every economist believes talks about it,” Swisher added, a point Salam also agreed with.

During a speech to the Economic Club of New York, Trump spoke about increasing tariffs on foreign imports to pay for things like child care support.

Salam argued the Biden’s deployment of tariffs have added to inflation woes, but Swisher dismissed this as a potential problem for Harris at the debate.

“It doesn’t matter,” she repeatedly said as Salam made his point.

Trump, she argued, is “owning” the issue of tariffs.

“It doesn’t matter because he’s owning it now,” she said.

“I know it doesn’t matter to you and I agree that it doesn’t matter matter to much of the press corps, but the fact the fact of the matter is —” Salam began before a frustrated Swisher cut in.

“It’s not the press corps!” she said.

“The Biden-Harris administration has sharpened —” Salam began again.

“That may be, but Trump has decided to take it and run with it and he’s running very far,” Swisher said.

“It’s a little bit tough for [Harris] to make that case, however, having served in this administration,” Salam replied.

“She doesn’t have to. He just owns it,” Swisher shot back.
