Bloomberg Columnist Complains Trump NOT Getting Much Media Attention Thanks to Protests
Bloomberg Businessweek correspondent Joshua Green on Friday said that the media isn’t giving “much attention” to Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York, prompting comic and pundit Bill Maher to agree that people just “don’t seem to care.”
On the latest edition of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher Green was joined by Fox News contributor and former Trump senior counselor Kellyanne Conway for the panel discussion on the election, campus protests, and other topics.
As the panel was discussing the election, Conway said that people care more about kitchen table issues than Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the prior election, a point which Maher and Green disputed.
Conway then said that elections are about “the future, not the past.”
Green replied to Conway about polling showing Trump will lose support if convicted, during which comment he made the puzzling claim that the press aren’t covering Trump’s legal troubles.
“I mean, you’ve seen polls that say if Donald Trump is convicted of a crime and he’s currently on trial, even though it doesn’t get much attention in the news, that support for Trump will ebb,” he said.
“Trump doesn’t get attention in the news?” Conway said incredulously. It’s all they talk about!”
“No, the criminal trial?” said Green. ” No, it’s nothing. It’s nothing but protesters this week.”
While it may be true viewers aren’t as interested in the Trump trial as networks hoped, it’s less credible to claim the trial and Trump’s other woes aren’t getting media attention.
On Friday, the day Maher’s show aired, we counted approximately 188 mentions of the words “hush money” on the three cable news channels and 41 mentions of “trump trial.” A number of those mentions were during shows that were titled with “Trump Trial” due to the extensive daytime coverage on MSNBC and CNN. If you check the guide on your television provider, you will find “Trump Hush Money Trial” is also the scheduled show name for several hours on Monday on CNN.
No show titles we found were named for the campus protests. At the time of this article, Trump’s name is mentioned 41 times on MSNBC’s home page. The word “protest” appears 7 times, with one of those being an article decrying media “hysteria” about the protests.
CONWAY: But if we’re looking backward. Elections are always about the future, not the past. That’s the way America needs to look at them. And right now they feel cost of living. And everyday quality of life has diminished.
GREEN: But as a pollster, you gotta worry. I mean, you’ve seen polls that say if Donald Trump is convicted of a crime and he’s currently on trial, even though it doesn’t get much attention in the news, that support for Trump will ebb.
CONWAY: Trump doesn’t get attention in the news? It’s all they talk about!
GREEN: No. The criminal trial. No, it’s nothing. It’s nothing but protesters this week. So …
CONWAY: Oh, okay Well…
MAHER: Well. That criminal trial really I mean, we’re treating it like it’s.
GREEN: It’s like the D block.
MAHER: Like it’s, it’s like the Gwyneth Paltrow skiing trial, I mean. People just don’t care.
