Jake Tapper GRILLS JD Vance on Claim Former Trump Officials Oppose Him Because He Wants World Peace: ‘That’s Really Your Argument!?’
CNN’s Jake Tapper grilled Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) during a tense interview about former Trump administration officials who are not supporting the former president’s bid for the White House in a preview the network shared Saturday night.
The network teased a testy interview between the two that is scheduled to air on Sunday morning’s State of the Union.
In a 38-second clip ahead of the Sunday program, Tapper pressed Vance hard to explain his position that former Donald Trump White House officials opposed him because he wanted peace.
TAPPER: So all those ten people, including the former vice president, Mike Pence, all of these people are – have this horribly damaged worldview and they’re all just going after Donald Trump because they want to send people into war? That’s really your argument.
VANCE: Absolutely, that’s my argument.
[CROSSTALk]
TAPPER: These are not conservative Republicans?
VANCE: So, all those ten people –.
[CROSSTALk]
TAPPER: Really? These are not conservative Republicans – These are not conservative Republicans who are concerned about Donald Trump? They’re not, that’s not right?
[CROSSTALk]
VANCE: All of these people, Jake, they came into office thinking that they could control Donald Trump. That, when he said he wanted peace in the world, –.
[CROSSTALk]
TAPPER: Mike Pence thought he could control Donald Trump? Really? [LAUGHTER]
VANCE: Yes he did. When he found out that he couldn’t, they all turned on Donald Trump.
In a joint letter obtained by Politico, more than a dozen former Trump administration officials said they supported John Kelly’s describing the former president as a Fascist. The letter read in part:
We applaud General Kelly for highlighting in stark details the danger of a second Trump term. Like General Kelly, we did not take the decision to come forward lightly. We are all lifelong Republicans who served our country. However, there are moments in history where it becomes necessary to put country over party. This is one of those moments. Everyone should heed General Kelly’s warning.
The full interview between Vance and Tapper will air on CNN at 9 am ET on Sunday.
