David Frum Assures Viewers Matt Gaetz Is ‘Too Sloppy’ to Run a ‘Fascist Police State’ as Attorney General
President-elect Donald Trump shocked the political world on Wednesday by announcing Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as his nominee for attorney general.
Democrats predictably panned the selection, but even among Republicans, reaction to the news was mixed. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has already said she opposes Gaetz’s nomination. One House Republican responded by asking, “Are you shittin’ me?”
Gaetz is currently being investigated by the House Ethics Committee over accusations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, and other allegations. Last year, the Department of Justice wrapped up a probe into the lawmaker and declined to pursue charges.
Appearing on Wednesday’s episode of The Beat on MSNBC, Atlantic writer David Frum ripped the Gaetz nomination and others Trump has made.
“There are two paths ahead for the Trump presidency,” he said. “One is the path of successful, sinister consolidation of power for bad ends… And then there’s the path of chaos. Self-indulgent, bitter, childish, petty. And it looks to me with these early picks, he’s choosing the path of chaos, not the path of consolidation.”
“When you say that, David Frum, you think that is a different type of problem for the opposition or resistance, or it is better for the opposition?” host Ari Melber asked.
Frum responded by offering viewers something of a consolation.
If you were going to put together a fascist police state, you wouldn’t ask Matt Gaetz to run it,” he replied, prompting Melber to chuckle.
“He’s too sloppy, he’s too careless, he’s too irresponsible,” Frum continued. “He’s not gonna get to work on time every day doing the dirty work that you want him to do. He’s going to have indulgences of his own. He’s gonna be caught up in scandals that are not relevant to the job.”
