Senate Republican Rips ‘Dangerous’ DOJ When Asked About Matt Gaetz as AG: ‘They Carry Subpoenas, Badges, and Guns!’

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-SD) ripped the Justice Department as “corrupt” and “dangerous” on Saturday during an interview with Fox Business host Lary Kudlow.

Kudlow welcomed Cramer and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for a joint interview to discuss President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Matt Gaetz for Attorney General.

Trump’s announcement stunned lawmakers on both sides of the aisle while there is doubt the beleaguered former Florida congressman could get confirmed by a majority Republican Senate.

Neither Cramer nor Johnson seemed concerned about Gaetz being unqualified while the former told Kudlow that he viewed the Justice Department as irredeemably corrupt.

Johnson said of potentially voting to confirm Gaetz, “We’ll have to see how that all unfolds. We’ll have a confirmation process here, and I’ll have an open mind.”

Kudlow then asked Cramer, “Senator Cramer, you certainly would agree that the Justice Department and the FBI, which is inside the Justice Department, needs a thoroughgoing, 100 percent, top to bottom housecleaning. Don’t you agree with that?” Cramer replied:

Well, I’m pretty sure Ron agrees with that as well as I do. Of course, the problem with the Justice Department is besides being pretty corrupt in terms of their use of lawfare, which I find disgusting, they’re dangerous. I mean, they carry subpoenas, badges, and guns! And they also, you know, they have a means of spying on all of us if they need to. Now, that doesn’t mean they’re all bad apples.

But there’s no question the consequence of a corrupt Justice Department that, frankly, needs a housecleaning. But I would add one other thing to all of this, Larry, and that is the American people want that. They’re afraid of their government. And the Justice Department needs to be the people that we’re least afraid of, not the people we’re most afraid of.
