Lauren Boebert Joins Cameo With Pitch For $250 Videos, Quickly Shuts Down Account
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) briefly joined the personalized video messaging app Cameo over the weekend, only to quickly shut down her account amid reported House ethics rules questions.
“It’s your girl from Colorado, Lauren Boebert,” said Boebert in a video published on Cameo. “I am so excited to be joining another platform where I can connect directly with supporters from all over the world.”
“Whether you or someone you know needs an America First pep talk. If you want to surprise friends or family with a message for a special day, or if you just want to know my thoughts on whatever’s on your mind, Cameo is the place to connect with me. You can book a video now on my Cameo profile, and I will be seeing you and talking with you soon,” added the Colorado Republican who was charging $250 for a video.
By Tuesday, Boebert’s account had been deactivated as it raised potential ethics concerns, reported The Hill.
Boebert joined the app just days after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) joined. Gaetz began selling $500 videos in the wake of his dropping out of the running to be Trump’s attorney general following allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor.
The Hill’s Emily Brooks explained the potential legal issues with Boebert selling videos on the app:
While Ethics Committee rules say that members may earn up to $31,815 per year outside of their congressional salary, there are limitations on how they may do so. One of the rules in the code of conduct dictates House members “may not accept an honorarium for a speech, a writing for publication, or other similar activity,” with a speech being defined as an “address, oration, talk, lecture, or other form of oral presentation, whether delivered in person, transmitted electronically, recorded, or broadcast over the media.”
Boebert has become one of the more well-known members of Congress for her outspoken rhetorical style and for constantly grabbing headlines with various controversies (Axios made a timeline of them here).
