‘I’m Sorry, Why Is Vice President Harris Not Here?’ Jim Gaffigan Takes Shot at Kamala’s Absence From Al Smith Dinner

Comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan took a shot at Vice President Kamala Harris’s absence from the annual Al Smith Dinner in New York on Thursday, before reciting a list of shows and podcasts the vice president did make time for.

Speaking at the dinner next to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), former President Donald Trump, and former First Lady Melania Trump, Gaffigan said:

You know, this event has been referred to as the Catholic Met Gala. Twenty-two percent of Americans identify as Catholic. Catholics will be a key demographic in every battleground state. I’m sorry, why is Vice President Harris not here?

The audience reacted with both shock and applause as Schumer – a close ally of Harris – could be seen laughing next to Gaffigan.

“I mean, consider this,” the comedian continued. “This is a room full of Catholics and Jews in New York City. This is a layup for the Democratic nominee.”

Gaffigan then took another shot at Harris, listing the shows and platforms she did manage to make time for, including the sex-focused podcast Call Her Daddy.

“In her defense, I mean she did find time to appear on The View, Howard Stern, Colbert, and the longtime staple of campaigning, the Call Her Daddy podcast,” he said. “You know what I think it is? I think she doesn’t like me. Chuck, do I have bad breath?”

Schumer, shaking his head, responded, “Nope.”

Harris opted not to attend the dinner, despite previous Democratic nominees – including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – attending the event.

Harris was the first major presidential candidate to turn down an invitation to the event since 1984.

While the vice president decided not to attend the dinner in person, she did deliver pre-recorded remarks in a video that took several jabs at Trump, who was in attendance.

President Joe Biden also delivered a virtual speech to the Al Smith Dinner in 2020, but that was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Harris’s decision not to attend the dinner received criticism from Catholics, including Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, who said he was “disappointed” by Harris’s absence.
