Bill Maher was briefly shocked by his guest’s declaration that cancel culture is over on his Club Random podcast.

Comedian Bill Burr joined Maher for the latest episode and he deployed a winning strategy for quickly pivoting him and his comedian friend away from cancel culture, a topic on which they clearly disagreed.

Maher was complimenting Burr’s performance as John F. Kennedy in Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted movie and Maher compared Burr’s success in movies and TV to that of comedian Louis C.K., minus the loss of numerous gigs due to sexual misconduct.

“They took $50 million from him,” Burr said. “I think they punished him.”

“Enough! Enough! I mean, for Christ’s sake, it’s not the end of the world. People have done so much worse things and gotten less,” Maher added.

The two then found a topic to disagree on when Burr declared that cancel culture is a thing of the past. Burr previously worked with Gina Carano, who was fired from The Mandalorian over controversial social media posts. Carano has since filed suit against Disney and claimed she was a victim of cancel culture.

Burr previously addressed Carano’s firing in 2021, defending his co-star and saying he’d have to “watch what the fuck I say.”

“Whenever cancel culture got to the point it was, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your standup act,’ yeah, that’s when it got weird, but that’s all over. It’s all over,” he said.

“What’s over? Cancel culture?” a shocked Maher said, taking a break from lighting his joint.

“Yeah, no one cares anymore,” Burr said.

“That’s so not true. Either one of us could get canceled in the next two minutes,” Maher shot back.

“No. For what? Well, if you’re not doing anything. It’s just, like, you did this joke about this group of people or that group of people, and I’ve decided… I don’t know. I feel like I’m going back two years in my life. I don’t even think about it anymore,” Burr said.

The comedian then quickly pivoted before Maher, now smoking his joint, could respond, not wanting to discuss the topic that is a frequent target for Maher.

“Nice ashtray, by the way,” Burr said.

Maher then held up the ashtray and the two began discussing the amount of stuff people can accumulate, not decided on whether cancel culture is dead, but seemingly in sync that as a subject between friends it definitely was.
