The View’s Joy Behar Goes OFF On Trump Over Alleged Praise of Hitler: ‘If People Still Follow This Fascist Pig, Then I Don’t Know What Else to Say’
The co-hosts of ABC’s The View seemingly reached a new level of frustration over former President Donald Trump after another account that he allegedly praised Adolf Hitler.
On Wednesday, the day after The New York Times released audio recordings of an interview with Gen. John Kelly, the four-star general who was Trump’s chief-of-staff. In his conversation with reporter Michael Schmidt, Kelly discussed how Trump would praise Hitler, saying the Nazi dictator responsible for the deaths of 7 million Jews during World War II “did some good things.”
After playing the audio, co-host Whoopi Goldberg turned first to co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump aide who now opposes the ex-president, and her frustration was palpable:
I mean, I just can’t believe that for four years people have been warning about this. This is — General John Kelly, as somebody who was so highly regarded by everyone in Trump’s West Wing, he was seen even by the most loyal Trump advisers, is a steadying force. And the fact that today Trump’s defenders are instead choosing to impugn a four-star general to defend a politician I think shows that there’s a cravenness and an unwillingness to ever stand up for what’s right.
But we’ve never actually been in this moment in history before where so many former senior military officials who directly served under Donald Trump and senior officials like myself are warning about his character, his infidelity to the Constitution, how he views our military. And I want to shake people and be like, why are you not believing us? How many more four-star generals need to tell you the truth about who this man is? He is so deeply dangerous. I’m hoping it breaks through, but I’m never going to lose hope. I’m not going to. But how many more people do you need to hear from? This is a man who lost — he’s a Gold Star father — he lost his son in combat after himself serving in combat for decades.
Co-host Sara Haines called out Trump’s admiration of dictators, saying that his affection for strongman leaders was a way of “pandering” to the “male vote.” She also pointed out that so many of the military personnel like Kelly who served under Trump and tried to rein him in were fired:
They’re not political. And he not only — they’ve come out and spoken about it, he fired many of them. And when those are the people in the room telling you something is so wrong, Trump is the sign of weakness.
After touching on how Trump supporters are deflecting from the comments to turn the conversation to the bad view on the economy, co-host Joy Behar finally threw up her figurative hands:
I don’t even know what to say anymore. If people still follow this fascist pig, then I don’t know what else to say. I really don’t. It’s like, how many times do we have to hear him say that, referring to immigrants as “animals,” and Hitler called cleansing Germany of all those parasites, referring to immigrants, and he called Jews “lice.” And this guy Trump calls people “vermin.” It’s the same language that Hitler used, okay?
How many times do we have to hear him say that John McCain was not a hero because he was captured, or that people who serve in the United States military — my father, my uncles, World War II — how many of us have relatives who served in World War Two to preserve democracy in this country? I don’t want to hear from these people anymore because they just, either they’re ignorant or willfully ignorant at this point. It’s absolutely crossed the line for me now.
