Netflix Emerging As ‘Likely Winner’ to Land Exclusive Rights to NFL’s Christmas Games Next Season: Report
Netflix is reportedly in the running and in the lead to secure the exclusive rights to the NFL’s Christmas Day games this season.
According to sportswriter John Ourand, the NFL was expected to release the schedule for its upcoming season today. That release, however, was delayed to May 15 as the league is embroiled in negotiations with Netflix for the Christmas games.
The league has two games scheduled for Christmas, with Netflix viewed as the “likely winner” to snag both of them.
It’s unknown how much money Netflix will end up paying for the rights to the games, but previous deals with other streaming services paint a clearer picture of the NFL’s asking price. For the 2023-24 season, NBCUniversal paid $110 million for a playoff game, and Amazon managed to secure a playoff game next season for around $150 million.
If Netflix gets the deal done, it will add to its growing catalogue of live events. After recently airing The Roast of Tom Brady, Netflix will broadcast the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson on July 20.
In 2025, the streaming service will be the exclusive home of WWE Monday Night Raw. Netflix reportedly paid more than $5 billion to air the program for the next decade.
