‘What’s Going On With the Patriots?’ Trump Roasts New England in Speech But Says ‘Great Guy’ Belichick Will Fix Team

The New England Patriots’ season has been such a disappointment that it’s even affecting the way former President Donald Trump gives analogies.

Trump on Tuesday gave a speech in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He attempted to compare President Joe Biden negotiating with Chinese President Xi Jinping to his old high school team facing off against a top NFL team. That’s when, for a moment, Trump drew a blank on which team would be fitting for the analogy since the Patriots are no longer the juggernaut they used to be.

“For him to negotiate with President Xi of China,” Trump said, “is like my high school football team playing… Let’s see, what’s a good football team nowadays? Philadelphia’s good. You know they change a little bit. I used to say New England. I used to say the Patriots.”

The mention of the Patriots drew groans from what seemed to be Patriots fans in the audience.

“I’d love to be able to say the Patriots,” Trump continued. “[Patriots coach Bill Belichick] is a great guy, great coach, but they’re having a little hard time. What’s going on with the Patriots? But he’s a great coach. He’ll figure it out somehow, but that was not a good game last night, was it?”

With Sunday’s 34-0 blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots fell to 1-4 through the first five weeks of the season.
