‘Genuinely Flabbergasted’: NFL Fans in Disbelief Over Utterly Absurd Depictions of Patriots Greats in New Aaron Hernandez Show

A new show portraying the tumultuous career of late NFL star Aaron Hernandez has left NFL fans baffled by the depictions of several notable New England Patriots.

FX on Sept. 17 premiered American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez. The show chronicles Hernandez’s life from his playing for the University of Florida Gators to his promising career with the Patriots.

His professional career, as many know by now, was cut short when his lengthy criminal history — which included multiple shootings and at least one murder — were unearthed. While incarcerated for the murder of Odin Lloyd, and five days after being acquitted of a separate double homicide, Hernandez was found dead in his cell. He had taken his own life.

Just a few episodes into a show about one of the most infamous athletes in history, however, most of the talk has been about the way Hernandez’s teammates are depicted. That includes retired tight end Rob Gronkowski, whose rowdy “party boy” disposition almost feels like a parody.

Not even the notoriously grumpy Bill Belichick was safe from brow-raising creative liberties. One scene shows the legendary coach jamming out to a rock song in his office.

For longtime fans, the visual of an animated Belichick blasting music at full volume — while dancing — came off as simply too unrealistic to believe.
