‘BLOCKED!’ Longtime CBS Announcer Kevin Harlan Absolutely Loses It When Chiefs Pull Off Improbable Last-Second Win
CBS announcer Kevin Harlan delivered an appropriately explosive call when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on a blocked field goal.
Down 16-14 with just a second left in Sunday’s game, the Broncos set up for a game-winning, 35-yard field goal. With a successful try, the Broncos 5-4 would have been the first team to take down the 8-0 Chiefs.
Somehow, the Chiefs got enough of a push at the line of scrimmage to get to Broncos kicker Wil Lutz. Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal then leapt in front of Lutz and deflected the ball toward the sideline. The home crowd at Arrowhead Stadium stadium erupted with cheers.
“Oooooh! Blocked!” Harlan said as the ball bounced around the field and multiple Chiefs players ran to recover it and officially end the game. “The Chiefs have won! The Chiefs have won!”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sprinted toward the end zone with his arm outstretched in celebration. Lutz walked off the field in disbelief as Broncos quarterback Bo Nix stood stunned on the sideline.
The broadcast then switched to a shot of multiple Chiefs players surrounding defensive tackle Mike Pennel. The 33-year-old dealt with some adversity during the week in the form of his car being stolen days earlier. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo actually offered Pennel his own car.
