Judge Dismisses Brett Favre’s Defamation Suit Against Shannon Sharpe

Hall-of-fame tight end Shannon Sharpe no longer has to worry about the threat of litigation from Brett Favre.

On Tuesday, it was reported that a federal judge dismissed Favre’s defamation suit against Sharpe. Favre also filed a lawsuit against ESPN’s Pat McAfee, but the two parties agreed on a resolution to drop it.

Both suits stemmed from comments made about Favre’s alleged role in a Mississippi welfare scandal. When the news of the allegations came out in September 2022, McAfee accused Favre of “stealing from the poor people of Mississippi.” When Sharpe was still on FS1’s Undisputed, he called Favre a “sleazeball.”

Favre filed defamation suits against them shortly after.

In May 2023, a report was published detailing Favre’s role within the scandal. Though he’s denied knowing how the state’s welfare funds were misappropriated, the report indicating that he was actually the “driving force” behind the operation.

In McAfee’s case, the commentator simply gave a statement on his show clarifying that his comments were “based solely on public information and allegations.” With that, Favre withdrew the suit.

In Sharpe’s case, on the other hand, the judge ruled that he “used constitutionally protected speech” when he criticized Favre.

Favre has yet to be indicted for his alleged role in the scandal.
