Jen Psaki Predicts Harris Performance Will Spark Debate About Decision to Push Out Biden
MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki predicted the Democratic Party would hold some frank conversations about the decision from top party leaders to ask President Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid earlier this year.
Biden exited the race in July – a month after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump raised concerns about his mental acuity.
Top Democrats reportedly urged him to exit the race, and he announced he would endorse Vice President Kamala Harris on July 21.
On Tuesday night, as battleground state returns showed a narrow path of victory for Harris, NBC’s Lester Holt asked Psaki if she believed urging Biden to step aside would spark a “conversation.”
“So, Jen, has the conversation begun yet about Joe Biden and about the decision to ask him to step aside?” he asked. Psaki replied:
It will begin. It will begin depending on the outcome. And obviously, there hasn’t been a race called yet. If this is not a Harris win, that will certainly be part of the discussion. It is – she’s run a campaign over the course of 107 days. That is not something we’ve seen in history. And there’ll be lots of questions about exactly that, the timing and the impact of that.
As of 12:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, The New York Times had declared the Republican Party would not only hold a Senate majority in January but that Harris was a longshot to defeat former President Donald Trump.
The Times assessed Harris had a nine percent chance to win the election and predicted Trump would win the election with more than 300 electoral votes.
Times reporter Nicholas Nehamas, who was covering the Harris watch party, wrote:
There is still no sign of Harris at her rapidly thinning watch party at Howard University, her alma mater. She could be speaking to a nearly deserted campus if she does not appear soon.
