Sean Spicer Defends Trump’s Obsession with Crowd Sizes, Says Ex-Boss Wants ‘Respect’ for His Movement

Sean Spicer argued his former boss Donald Trump’s focus on crowd sizes comes out of a frustration over never getting the proper “respect” from the media.

Spicer, a NewsNation political contributor and former White House press secretary under Trump, joined Dan Abrams, Mediaite’s founder, on Monday evening where Abrams highlighted Trump’s recent declarations about his crowd sizes versus those Vice President Kamala Harris is drawing.

On Truth Social, Trump falsely claimed Harris used an AI-generated image to show a fake crowd in Detroit. The massive crowd gathered outside the plane carrying Harris and her running mate Tim Walz drew a massive crowd captured in photos and video, but Trump used one photo to suggest the entire thing was fake and Harris should be “disqualified” for election interference.

“All of this nonsense. All based on a tweet with a still image claiming Harris was busted faking the crowd — except we know none of that’s true! There’s video that shows the same crowd,” Abrams noted.

He also highlighted a Mar-a-Lago press conference last week where Trump was asked about Harris’s crowd sizes and he accused the media multiple times of ignoring the thousands he brings out to campaign events. At one point, the former president event suggested the crowd he brought out on Jan. 6, 2021 — just before the Capitol riot — was bigger than the amount Martin Luther King Jr. brought out, though estimates do not support this.

Abrams called Trump’s focus on crowd sizes a “near obsession.”

“Why do you think that Trump is doing this? Can he just not help himself on this issue?” Abrams asked Spicer.

Spicer argued it’s an issue that Trump has long had with the media and what he called a lack of “respect” for the size and scope of the MAGA movement.

“Look, I think this goes back to a degree of wanting the respect for the size and scope of the movement that he’s had and he’s never felt as though the media has given him his due,” Spicer said.

He called MAGA unlike anything he’s seen in politics in 30 years.

“I don’t think the media has ever given him the respect he deserves for developing that. In fact, if you think about it, during the primary campaign of 2015, it was, ‘he doesn’t have a ground game, he doesn’t understand politics, you’ve got these other well successful politicians’ — and again and again and again he busted through political hurdles,” Spicer said.
