Trump Dodges On Whether Or Not He’d Pardon Himself As President, But Says He’d Fire Jack Smith ‘In Two Seconds’
Former President Donald Trump declared he would fire Special Counsel Jack Smith “within two seconds” if he wins the election.
Trump joined conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt for an interview on Thursday where Hewitt told him he’d either need to pardon himself or fire Smith if he wins. Smith is overseeing Department of Justice investigations into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his possession of classified documents after leaving office.
“So you’re going to have a very tough choice the day after you take the oath of office, or maybe even the day that you take the oath of office. You’re either going to have to pardon yourself, or you’re going to have to fire Jack Smith. Which one will you do?” Hewitt asked.
“It’s so easy. It’s so easy. In fact, he’s a crooked person,” Trump said.
The former president said Smith would be near the top of his priority list right away. Trump did not shoot down the idea of pardoning himself, though he said last year such a scenario is “very unlikely.”
“It’s so easy. I would fire him within two seconds. He’ll be one of the first things addressed,” he said.
Trump went on later to call Hewitt a “scoundrel” and a “mean man” who took things “too far” with the FBI raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property to obtain classified documents.
“Jack Smith is a scoundrel. He’s a very dishonest man, in my opinion, very dishonest man. And he’s a mean man. He’s a mean man, but his problem is, he’s so mean that he always goes too far like the raid of Mar-A-Lago,” Trump said, going on to describe authorities going through his son and wife’s clothing.
Hewitt argued Trump could face impeachment efforts if he fired Smith, but Trump dismissed this possibility.
During his chat with Hewitt, Trump also said he is open to pardoning President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. The president’s son is awaiting sentencing for gun and tax crimes.
“”I wouldn’t take it off the books. See, unlike Joe Biden, despite what they’ve done to me, where they’ve gone after me so viciously, despite what, and Hunter’s a bad boy. There’s no question about it. He’s been a bad boy. All you had to do is see the laptop from hell,” he said.
