FBI Director Reminds Marjorie Taylor Greene, ‘I’m Not Part of the Department of Homeland Security’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had a contentious exchange with FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday, during which Wray reminded the lawmaker he does not work for the Department of Homeland Security.

Wray, whose FBI is within the Department of Justice, testified during a Homeland Security Committee meeting, where Greene questioned him about the Richmond field office’s reliance on the Southern Poverty Law Center as a source. That reliance led the office to issue a memo warning of possible violence inspired by “radical traditional Catholic ideology.” The FBI director has repeatedly said he ordered the memo rescinded once he heard about it.

Greene asked Wray about a lawyer with the SPLC, who attended a protest inside the Capitol calling for a ceasefire in Israel’s war in Gaza. She held up a poster with private messages and this exchange ensued in which Greene suggested Wray should have seen the messages because she posted them on her X/Twitter account:

GREENE: I would have you know, Mr. Wray, that this one right here, this person involved in the global intifada group that illegally– they broke the law, came in and occupied the Cannon Office House Building [sic, Cannon House Office Building], interrupted Congress, interrupted hearings. Right here, Katrina Bleckley, is the lead attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center. Were you aware of this?

WRAY: Congresswoman, as I said, I haven’t seen the photos that you’re holding up before.

GREENE: Maybe, well, I posted them on my Twitter account. It’s public. You know, maybe–

WRAY: I don’t spend a lot of time on Twitter.

GREENE: Well, you know, you, oh, I’m sure you do because the Department of Homeland Security organized with other offices has censored many Americans, including myself.

WRAY: I’m not part of the Department of Homeland Security.

GREENE: Right, Mr. Wray, you should, you should be interested in investigating terrorism. And this right here is proof that we have terrorists in our own office building!

Wednesday was hardly the first time Greene and Wray clashed. In June, she accused him of “hiding” alleged crimes committed by President Joe Biden.
