Chris Cuomo Rips Morning Joe Hosts for ‘Opportunism’ with Turn Back to Trump ‘Love’: ‘Never an Act of Conscience’
Chris Cuomo characterized Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s trip to Mar-a-Lago as pure “opportunism” rather than some moment of “conscience.”
Cuomo was joined by Stephen A. Smith and Bill O’Reilly on Thursday. While discussing the latest at MSNBC—including that it and other cable channels are being spun off into their own company—Cuomo offered his take on blowback to Scarborough and Brzezinski by noting their roller-coaster relationship with President-elect Donald Trump and even suggesting he would have been “gonzo” at CNN had he had the pair’s early relationship with Trump.
Cuomo said:
“The interesting part here is the backstory. Before they hated Trump, they did more to get Donald Trump elected, Joe and Mika, than anybody in the media. I am as guilty as any for giving Trump a lot of attention and his rallies during the campaign. Okay? There’s an explanation for that, too, but doesn’t matter right now. What does matter is, they loved him. They were on videotape, Bill will remember this, in a commercial break, asking Trump what they should talk about when they come back. And if I did that, okay, I would have been fired, and they liked me at the time there and it would have been dunzo for me.”
Cuomo was terminated by CNN in 2021 amid an investigation into alleged help he gave his brother Andrew Cuomo, then New York governor, in dealing with sexual harassment accusations.
Scarborough and Brzezinski have been responding to blowback to their trip as critics point out that the pair had spent the lead-up to the election talking about what a danger Trump presented to democracy. As Cuomo noted, Trump once had a positive relationship with Scarborough and Brzezinski, appearing on their show before his first term in office.
Cuomo argued that Scarborough and Brzezinski were making another turn on Trump out of “opportunism.”
“What it reeks of, Bill and Stephen, is opportunism, that this was never an act of conscience,” he said.
