JUST IN: Bullet Casings in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Targeted Killing Reveal A Cryptic Message And Possible Clue

The murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has taken a mysterious turn after investigators revealed cryptic messages were etched into the bullet casings used in the targeted attack.

The words “deny,” “depose,” and “defend” were carved into shell casings and live rounds recovered from the scene, police sources told ABC News.

The words appear on the cover of Jay M. Feinman’s book about why insurance companies may not pay out claims.

Thompson was gunned down early Wednesday outside the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, where he was scheduled to speak at an investor conference. The suspect, captured on surveillance footage, appeared to plan the ambush meticulously.

According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the gunman lay in wait before stepping out from behind a car and firing multiple shots, striking Thompson in the back and calf. The assailant then fled on an e-bike toward Central Park, leaving behind a water bottle and cell phone near the scene. Police are analyzing the items for potential DNA or fingerprints.

“This was not a random act of violence but a targeted attack,” Kenny said.

Surveillance video earlier captured the suspect at a Starbucks near the hotel, purchasing a water bottle and energy bars about 30 minutes before the shooting. The man was described as white and dressed in all black clothing.

Experts told CNN the assailant displayed proficiency with firearms, managing to clear a jamming malfunction during the attack with ease.

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed he had recently received threats over alleged customer complaints. “He said there were people threatening him, but I don’t know the details,” she told NBC News.

UnitedHealth Group expressed shock and grief in a statement, calling Thompson a “dear friend and colleague.”

The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect, whose motive remains a mystery. The investigation is ongoing.
