Jon Stewart Takes Aim At Morning Joe Claim Dems Were ‘Too Woke’ To Win: ‘They Acted Like Republicans for the Last Four Months!’
Comedian Jon Stewart took aim at liberal political pundits claiming that the Democrats lost the election because they were “too woke” in a cutting 15-minute monologue to open The Daily Show on Monday.
Stewart profiled, among other commentators, Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski, who read out New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s takedown of the Democratic Party’s “identity politics” in full, arguing it destroyed the party’s chances of winning the White House by alienating voters.
As pundits pick apart the Democratic loss, co-host Joe Scarborough followed the reading on Monday’s show with a critique of “far left” stances he said did not represent the opinions of most voters, including calls to defund the police and gender identity issues.
Stewart, in reaction, slammed commentators for pushing a narrative he finds detached from reality.
“I only have one problem with the ‘woke’ theory,” he remarked, “I just didn’t recall seeing any Democrats running on woke shit.”
Stewart argued, instead, that Democrats had “acted like Republicans” and aired a series of Democratic campaign ads that centered on issues like the border crisis, pro-police messaging, and support for firearm rights.
“They acted like Republicans for the last four months,” Stewart asserted, adding a jab about Democrats donning “camo hats” and “going to Cheney family reunions.” He quipped, “Do you know how dangerous it is to wear a hunting hat around Cheney?”
Building on his critique, Stewart suggested that Democrats had inadvertently let outdated stereotypes shape their image.
“Democrats were mostly running against an identity that was defined for them based on a couple of months of post-George Floyd, defund the police Instagram posts from four years ago,” he said. “So the Democrats have got to chill out.”
In a final note, Stewart reminded viewers that the current political setup would not last “forever,” referencing Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide win.
“Everyone thought that was the end of the Democrats,” he noted. “But eight years later, there was a Democrat back in office.”
