Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was covered in scratches following the team’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord on Tuesday. He claimed they were self-inflicted.

The club had a 3-0 lead in the second half before giving up three unanswered goals of their own. Making matters worse was the fact that all three goals came during a disastrous 15-minute stretch. Jack Grealish was just inches away from saving the day for Man City when his shot in stoppage time deflected off the post.

Instead of a resounding win, Man City came away with a draw. The club remains winless in its last six matches.

After the match, Guardiola appeared in front of the media with numerous scratches on his nose and on top of his head.

A reporter asked him during a press conference what happened.

“With my finger, yeah,” the Catalan manager said. “With my nail. I want to harm myself, yeah.”

Guardiola then walked off with a grin as one reporter said, “It’ll be OK.”

The manager later released a statement clarifying that he wasn’t making light of self-harm.

“I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch,” Guardiola said in a tweet, “which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this.”

“My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self harm.

“I know that many people struggle with mental health issues every day, and I would like to take this moment to highlight one of the ways in people can seek help, by calling the Samaritans hotline on 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org.”
